Today’s video is Psychic TV – “Wicked” (1989).
Psychic TV explored acid house’s darker side with “Wicked,” released in 1989 as Mistress Mix. The track appeared on Jack the Tab / Tekno Acid Beat, a double compilation that introduced British audiences to emerging acid house. However, Psychic TV approached the genre with experimental vision. Founded by Genesis P-Orridge and Peter Christopherson, the group combined electronic music, performance art, industrial sounds, and occult imagery. As a result, their acid house experiments sounded far from conventional dance music. Moreover, “Wicked” uses repetitive chants and provocative references to control, pain, sexuality, and spirituality.
The Mistress Mix alias was part of Psychic TV’s musical hoax. Genesis P-Orridge and collaborators invented fictional artists to suggest a larger British underground acid house scene. Consequently, Jack the Tab / Tekno Acid Beat blurred the line between musical experimentation and conceptual art. The release also established Psychic TV as early adopters of acid house in Britain. While earlier albums explored industrial music, psychedelia, and experimental electronics, this compilation embraced rave culture’s hypnotic rhythms. Nevertheless, the band’s fascination with ritual, repetition, and altered states remained central to its sound.
Psychic TV emerged from the British industrial underground, with Genesis P-Orridge and Christopherson linked to Throbbing Gristle and Coil. Throughout their career, the group challenged conventions and explored unconventional release strategies. For example, their monthly live-album series began in 1986 and produced 17 releases. Meanwhile, their associated organisation, Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth, extended into philosophy, ritual, and magical practices. Therefore, “Wicked” is more than a detour into acid house. It connects Psychic TV’s experimental roots with the late-1980s dance revolution. Ultimately, the track captures a period when underground electronic music challenged expectations.
