Today’s video of the day is the Matte Blvck – "Western Fold" released in 2021.
Matte Blvck brings dark synth, industrial electronics, and cinematic tension to “Western Fold.” The track arrived on November 27, 2020. It opens the band’s debut album, I’m Waving, Not Drowning. Furthermore, its heavy rhythms create a bleak and futuristic atmosphere. The lyrics explore guilt, memory, and the search for a miracle. However, the song carries a deeper meaning beneath its dark surface. Bidi Cobra explained that “Western Fold” examines Western civilization, capitalism, and the separation of church and state. In addition, the band uses a “shit sandwich” idea to frame its message. People may move somewhere new, yet they still carry their problems with them. Here, that idea expands from individuals to an entire society.
Matte Blvck formed in 2019 with Alex Gonzales, Bidi Cobra, and Daniel. Although the members knew each other for years, they had never written music together. Gonzales also brought extensive touring experience to the project. He had previously worked as a professional drummer, including with Julien-K. Meanwhile, he wrote much of the debut material during long stretches on the road. The band then developed I’m Waving, Not Drowning during the 2020 lockdowns. As a result, isolation shaped the album’s dark and futuristic character. The group drew inspiration from cinematic worlds such as Blade Runner and The Matrix. Consequently, “Western Fold” combines mechanical percussion with dystopian synth textures. The album also includes a faithful cover of Depeche Mode’s “Stripped,” reinforcing its dark electronic roots.
“Western Fold” therefore establishes the sound and themes of Matte Blvck’s debut. The band later expanded the track with a 2021 radio edit. In 2022, ÆON RINGS also delivered an official remix. These versions helped extend the song beyond its original album setting. At the same time, the track remains closely tied to the band’s early identity. Its dark synth foundation connects cinematic electronics with industrial and post-punk influences. Moreover, its social commentary gives the music greater weight. I’m Waving, Not Drowning introduced Matte Blvck as a band focused on darkness and survival. “Western Fold” captures that balance especially well. It sounds bleak, yet its search for a miracle leaves room for hope.
