Today’s video of the day is 808 State – "In Yer Face" released in 1991.
808 State released “In Yer Face” in February 1991 as the second single from their third studio album, Ex. The Manchester electronic group helped shape the UK acid house movement during the late 1980s. Formed in 1987, 808 State gained international attention with “Pacific State” in 1989. However, they took a harder direction with “In Yer Face.” Its pounding beats, menacing piano riff, and relentless bassline created an aggressive sound. Moreover, the track captured the raw energy of the UK rave and warehouse scenes.
The song became 808 State’s highest-charting UK single, reaching number nine. It even surpassed “Pacific State,” which peaked at number ten. Interestingly, its driving bassline evolved from the riff in their 1990 single “Olympic.” Meanwhile, an ominous spoken-word sample from journalist Alistair Cooke added a political edge. The sample came from his BBC radio series Letter from America. As a result, the track combined pounding club rhythms with a rebellious atmosphere. The group also performed their music live using synthesizers and other hardware. In August 1991, “In Yer Face” energized crowds at Manchester’s Cities in the Park festival.
Ex marked an important step in 808 State’s evolution. While their earlier album Ninety helped establish their acid house sound, Ex explored a broader electronic palette. It combined club-focused rhythms with experimental textures and featured collaborations with artists including Bernard Sumner and Björk. Furthermore, “In Yer Face” demonstrated the group’s ability to push dance music into more forceful territory. Its influence has continued through later remixes and reinterpretations. Ultimately, the track remains a defining example of early-1990s British rave music and 808 State’s restless creativity.
