Today’s video of the day is Laibach – "My Favorite Things" released in 2018.

Laibach’s “My Favorite Things” transforms a beloved musical standard into something darker and more unsettling. Released on November 23, 2018, the track appears on The Sound of Music. The album grew from Laibach’s historic 2015 performance in Pyongyang, North Korea. The group chose songs from the classic 1965 film because North Koreans widely use it for English-language study. However, Laibach turned these familiar melodies into industrial, martial-pop experiments. Boris Benko and Marina Martensson also contribute vocals. Meanwhile, Milan Fras delivers the song’s deep, commanding presence. Most notably, an angelic children’s choir creates a striking contrast behind his voice.

Formed in 1980 in Trbovlje, Slovenia, Laibach quickly challenged musical and political conventions. The group became a major force in the Yugoslav industrial and avant-garde scene. Moreover, their provocative imagery often examines power, propaganda, nationalism, and authority. The Sound of Music continues that tradition through an unusual cultural collision. Instead of simply covering Rodgers and Hammerstein, Laibach reshapes the material into political theater. For example, “Maria / Korea” connects the musical’s themes with the divided Korean peninsula. Likewise, “Letter to Korea” includes a critical speech from DPRK cultural officials. The album also features “Arirang” and performances by students from the Kum Song Music School. As a result, the record stands apart while still connecting with Laibach’s earlier experimental work.

Watch the video for “My Favorite Things,” edited by Tomislav Gangl and Luka Karlin. The live footage comes from Laibach’s premiere of The Sound of Music. The performance took place at the Steirischer Herbst festival in Graz, Austria. Featuring Marina Martensson, Boris Benko, and the Edelweiss children’s choir, the video captures the production’s theatrical power. Additionally, Nina Noč performs the opening dance sequence. Surreal images of cream-colored ponies and crisp apple strudels add another layer. Therefore, the innocent imagery clashes with Laibach’s heavy industrial sound. The result turns a familiar favorite into a striking audiovisual experience.
