Today’s video of the day is Butthole Surfers – "Cough Syrup" released in 1996.

Butthole Surfers’ “Cough Syrup” stands as a chaotic gem from their 1996 album Electriclarryland. Released by Capitol Records, the album marked a commercial peak for the band. Known for their wild performances and sonic unpredictability, Butthole Surfers formed in San Antonio, Texas, in 1981. Fronted by Gibby Haynes and guitarist Paul Leary, they blended punk, noise rock, and psychedelia into something uniquely disturbing—and strangely catchy. “Cough Syrup” reflects the band’s bizarre humor and surreal lyricism. While “Pepper” brought them Top 40 success, deeper cuts like “Cough Syrup” stayed closer to their experimental roots. Its murky bassline and odd vocal delivery feel more in line with earlier albums like Locust Abortion Technician and Rembrandt Pussyhorse. Still, Electriclarryland polished their sound without losing their edge.

This fan-made video gives new life to “Cough Syrup.” It syncs surreal visuals with the track’s off-kilter mood. The song’s disjointed rhythm and cryptic lyrics pair perfectly with a video that feels like a late-night fever dream. As with much of Butthole Surfers’ work, you’re not supposed to understand it—you’re supposed to feel it. Electriclarryland was originally titled Oklahoma! before Capitol stepped in. The final name parodied Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland, continuing the band’s tradition of irreverent album titles. Earlier, they had released Hairway to Steven, a nod to Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” This blend of parody, provocation, and psychedelia runs through all their records.

“Cough Syrup” may not have charted, but it captures the soul of Electriclarryland. It bridges the gap between the band’s noisy past and their brief flirtation with mainstream fame. For longtime fans, it’s a reminder that even in their most accessible phase, Butthole Surfers stayed weird. The video adds a new dimension to the song’s eerie humor. It’s not official—but it feels authentic. That’s what makes it worth watching.
