Today’s video of the day is The Neon Judgement – "Awful Day" released in 1986.

Few bands shaped the early Electronic Body Music scene like The Neon Judgement. Formed in Belgium in 1981 by Dirk Da Davo and TB Frank, the duo blended post-punk, darkwave, industrial, and rock into a distinctive sound. Their 1986 television performance of "Awful Day" on a French TV show captures the band’s raw stage presence. Moreover, the song highlights the creative chemistry between both musicians, who wrote, composed, and produced the track together.

"Awful Day" opens the band’s landmark album Mafu Cage, released on May 19, 1986. In addition, the song appeared as a 12-inch single with remixes of "TV Treated" and "The Man." Driving synthesizers, mechanical drum machines, and brooding guitar lines create its unmistakable atmosphere. Meanwhile, Dirk Da Davo’s haunting vocals reinforce themes of grief, loneliness, lost love, and mortality. As a result, the track became one of the defining moments in The Neon Judgement’s catalog.

Mafu Cage marked an important step in the band’s evolution. Earlier releases leaned heavily toward post-punk experimentation. However, this album refined their Electronic Body Music style without losing their dark rock edge. Consequently, it became one of their most influential records and helped inspire later industrial and EBM artists. Today, "Awful Day" remains a fan favorite because it perfectly balances emotion, energy, and atmosphere. Likewise, this rare 1986 television appearance offers an authentic glimpse into one of Belgium’s most influential electronic acts at their creative peak.
