Today’s video of the day is Cocteau Twins – "Ivo" released in 1984.

“Ivo” by Cocteau Twins remains one of the defining songs of 1984 dream pop. The track opens the band’s third studio album, Treasure, released through 4AD. Moreover, the song introduced listeners to the album’s surreal and emotional atmosphere. Elizabeth Fraser delivers abstract lyrics filled with vivid imagery and unusual phrasing. Meanwhile, Robin Guthrie layers shimmering guitar textures over Simon Raymonde’s melodic basslines. As a result, “Ivo” feels both mysterious and cinematic. The song also honors Ivo Watts-Russell, the co-founder of 4AD, who strongly supported the band’s early career.

Cocteau Twins formed in Scotland in 1979 and quickly became one of the most influential acts in alternative music. Earlier albums like Garlands leaned toward darker post-punk sounds. However, Treasure expanded their style with brighter melodies and layered production. Therefore, “Ivo” acts as a bridge between the band’s gothic beginnings and their later ethereal work. The song also introduces themes and names found throughout the album, including “Lorelei,” “Pandora,” and “Persephone.” Consequently, it works as a musical overture for the entire record.

The video for “Ivo” perfectly matches the song’s dreamlike tone. Soft lighting, shadowy imagery, and abstract visuals create a hypnotic mood. Furthermore, the clip reflects the artistic identity that defined 4AD during the 1980s. Although Treasure was not a mainstream commercial hit, it later became a landmark release in dream pop and shoegaze history. In addition, “Ivo” helped shape the atmospheric sound later explored on albums like Victorialand and Heaven or Las Vegas. Today, the song still stands as one of the most beautiful and influential moments in the Cocteau Twins catalog.
