Today’s video of the day is Elton John & RuPaul – "Don’t Go Breaking My Heart" released in 1994.

Elton John teamed up with RuPaulin 1994 for a playful take on “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.” This track was originally a 1976 duet with Kiki Dee. For the 1994 version, Elton chose RuPaul, then rising as a pop culture icon. The result was bold, campy, and fun. This version appears on Elton John’s Duets album. Released in 1993, Duets features collaborations with a wide range of artists. These include k.d. lang, Leonard Cohen, and George Michael. The album highlights Elton’s love for genre-crossing and vocal pairings. “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” with RuPaul was the second single. It brought a lively, modern twist to the classic hit.

The music video is pure entertainment. Elton and RuPaul dress as famous couples through history. They appear as Antony and Cleopatra, Sonny and Cher, and Danny and Sandy from Grease. They even show up as Marie Antoinette and Louis XIV. Each costume is over-the-top, adding a sense of theater. The video blends humor with glamor, matching the song’s upbeat tone. Elton John’s career spans decades. His early albums like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Captain Fantastic defined 1970s pop-rock. In the 1980s, he explored synth-pop and ballads. By the 1990s, he leaned into collaborations. Duets stands out as a collection of partnerships. It shows his versatility and willingness to evolve.

RuPaul, already famous for “Supermodel (You Better Work),” brought charisma and style. This duet helped connect Elton with a younger, queer-friendly audience. It also showcased RuPaul’s vocal talent and presence beyond drag. Compared to other albums, Duets is a celebration of collaboration. It doesn’t focus on one genre or theme. Instead, it highlights Elton’s wide musical reach. “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” fits this approach perfectly. The song is upbeat, catchy, and full of personality.
