Today’s video of the day is The Residents – “Act Of Being Polite” released in 1980.

The Residents are an avant-garde music collective formed in the early 1970s. Known for their anonymity, they wear signature eyeball masks and maintain a mysterious image. Their music combines experimental sounds, surreal lyrics, and unconventional storytelling. The song Act of Being Polite appears on their 1980 album, The Commercial Album. This album features 40 songs, each lasting exactly one minute. The concept behind the album focuses on brevity, creating bite-sized tracks with pop song structures. This unique approach redefines commercial music, offering strange yet accessible melodies.

In Act of Being Polite, a man wrestles with his emotions. He harbors no attraction for his lover but hides this truth. His silence becomes the “act of being polite.” Eventually, the burden overwhelms him, and he confesses. This revelation devastates his lover. The song explores themes of honesty, self-restraint, and emotional fallout in relationships. The Commercial Album differs from The Residents’ earlier works like Duck Stab/Buster & Glen or Eskimo, which lean heavily on experimental sounds. This album blends quirky pop elements with deeper, introspective themes. However, the bizarre storytelling remains consistent with their signature style.

The video for Act of Being Polite complements the song’s eerie tone. Its surreal visuals and dark humor reflect the emotional tension in the lyrics. This aligns with The Residents’ knack for creating immersive, unsettling art. The Commercial Album holds a unique place in The Residents’ discography. It bridges experimental and pop music while retaining their avant-garde identity. Act of Being Polite serves as a prime example of the album’s ability to present complex emotions within a concise format. The song continues to intrigue listeners with its haunting narrative and peculiar charm. It showcases The Residents’ talent for turning unconventional ideas into lasting art.
