Today’s video of the day is Duran Duran – “White Lines (Don’t Do It)” released in 1995.

Duran Duran‘s video for "White Lines (Don’t Do It)" showcases the band’s unique take on a classic. This cover song appears on their covers album, Thank You, released on July 3, 1995, by Capitol-EMI. Originally performed by Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel in 1983, "White Lines (Don’t Do It)" had an ironic twist on the cocaine-fueled party lifestyle. However, it included a "don’t do it" message to discourage drug use.

The song’s lyrics reference real-life events. For instance, the line "A businessman is caught with 24 kilos / He’s out on bail and out of jail and that’s the way it goes" refers to John DeLorean. In 1982, the car manufacturer was entrapped by the FBI with drugs to save his company from bankruptcy. Though the case was dismissed, DeLorean’s reputation suffered. Duran Duran filmed the black-and-white video in January 1995. Nick Egan directed the video, featuring the band and the Furious Five performing together. The visuals include breakdancers and people in skeleton masks, adding a dynamic and edgy feel.

Duran Duran has a rich history in music. Formed in Birmingham, England, in 1978, they became known for their new wave sound and stylish videos. They gained fame with hits like "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Rio." Thank You stands out as their only covers album, showcasing their ability to reinterpret classic songs. "White Lines (Don’t Do It)" fits well into Duran Duran’s discography. It shows their versatility and willingness to experiment with different genres. The song contrasts with their earlier, more pop-oriented work, adding a darker, more serious tone.

In conclusion, Duran Duran’s cover of "White Lines (Don’t Do It)" highlights their musical adaptability. The video, directed by Nick Egan, combines striking visuals with powerful performances. This song, featured on Thank You, connects to the band’s broader journey by demonstrating their evolving sound and artistic growth.
