Today’s video of the day is Beastie Boys – "Ch-Check It Out" released in 2004.

Beastie Boys returned in 2004 with "Ch-Check It Out," an explosive hip-hop anthem full of humor and confidence. Released as the lead single from To the 5 Boroughs, the song ended the group’s five-year break between singles. Moreover, it delivered the witty rhymes and playful energy fans expected. The track topped the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, reached the UK Top 10, and became a number-one hit in Canada. It also earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance. Meanwhile, Adam Yauch directed the memorable video under his Nathanial Hörnblowér pseudonym. Its fast-paced action scenes and New York City locations perfectly matched the song’s lively spirit.

Formed in New York City in 1981, Beastie Boys began as a hardcore punk band before transforming hip-hop forever. Their breakthrough album, Licensed to Ill, made history as the first rap album to top the Billboard 200. Later, they expanded their sound with acclaimed releases like Paul’s Boutique, Check Your Head, Ill Communication, and Hello Nasty. Therefore, To the 5 Boroughs felt both familiar and fresh. Instead of chasing trends, the trio celebrated their hometown while returning to sample-driven production and sharp lyrical chemistry.

"Ch-Check It Out" also became a pop culture favorite after debuting on the television series The O.C. before its official release. Furthermore, its catchy hook and infectious beat kept it in heavy rotation on radio and music television. The song samples Peggy Lee’s version of "(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay," adding another layer of musical creativity. Today, both the track and its entertaining video remain highlights of Beastie Boys’ remarkable catalog. As a result, "Ch-Check It Out" stands as one of the defining hip-hop singles of 2004 and an essential chapter in the group’s enduring legacy.
