Today’s video of the day is MGT & Ville Valo – "Knowing Me Knowing You" released in 2016.

In 2016, guitarist Mark Gemini Thwaite, known as MGT, joined forces with Finnish vocalist Ville Valo for a powerful reimagining of ABBA’s Knowing Me Knowing You. Their dark, atmospheric version was released with an official video that captured the song’s emotional weight through shadowy visuals and dramatic imagery. MGT, born in Birmingham, had made his name playing guitar with The Mission in the 1990s before launching projects like BlueMax and later his solo work. Valo, the voice of HIM, had already built a global reputation for blending heavy rock with romantic and melancholic themes. Their collaboration brought together two icons of gothic and alternative music.

The song was featured on MGT’s debut solo album Volumes, also released in 2016. The album highlighted his wide-ranging influences and collaborations with well-known artists from across the alternative scene. Knowing Me Knowing You quickly became a standout track, not only because of its reinvention of a pop classic, but also due to Valo’s distinctive baritone that gave the cover a haunting edge. Within Volumes, the song represents MGT’s passion for reshaping familiar material into something darker and more powerful. For Valo, the track echoed themes long present in HIM’s catalog—love, heartbreak, and longing.

The video elevated the collaboration further, matching the brooding tone with stylish visuals that emphasized mood and atmosphere. Its mix of performance shots and gothic imagery connected directly to fans of both artists, offering something both fresh and familiar. While the rest of Volumes explores different sounds and voices, Knowing Me Knowing You stands as its emotional centerpiece. For MGT, it remains one of his most celebrated works, and for Ville Valo, it marks one of his strongest collaborations outside HIM. Together, they created a timeless version of the ABBA classic that continues to resonate within gothic rock and alternative music circles.
