Today’s video of the day is Public Domain – “Operation Blade (Bass In The Place…)” released in 2000.

“Operation Blade (Bass in the Place…)” is a hard techno anthem by Scottish electronic group Public Domain. Released on November 20, 2000, it was the band’s debut single and became a global hit. The song samples Pump Panel’s remix of New Order’s Confusion, famously featured in the 1998 film Blade. Its title pays homage to the movie and the 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner. Public Domain formed in the early 2000s, with Mark Sherry, Alistair MacIsaac, and James Allan leading the charge. Known for their high-energy tracks, they blended techno and hardcore influences. Their only studio album, Hard Hop Superstars, released in 2001, includes “Operation Blade.” The album showcases their signature sound and cemented their place in electronic music history.

“Operation Blade” reached number five on the UK Singles Chart, staying in the top ten for two weeks. It also achieved chart success in Australia, Austria, and Norway, breaking into multiple top tens worldwide. Critics praised the song’s raw energy and rave-ready beats. British publication NME described it as “hardcore brilliance,” while Swiss radio host Matthias Völlm called it a “good” track, though with limited airplay potential.

The song stands out as the most successful single from Hard Hop Superstars. Its success helped introduce Public Domain to a global audience. Other tracks on the album explore similar hard techno styles, creating a cohesive listening experience. However, none achieved the same level of recognition as “Operation Blade.” The music video features pulsating visuals and captures the adrenaline-pumping vibe of the track. Its dark, club-focused imagery mirrors the Blade movie’s underground aesthetic, enhancing its appeal to electronic music fans. Public Domain’s impact on the electronic scene is undeniable, even with a limited discography. Their ability to merge cinematic themes with hard-hitting beats makes “Operation Blade” a classic.
